A Suspenseful Night At the Police Station
A enjoyable sort of screwball murder mystery, with no shortage of characters and suspects. William Gargan plays the honest, even-tempered lieutenant who is tempted by love and by graft and finally succumbs to one of these. Carole Landis is okay, but gets little screen time with a role in which she mainly looks good, professes her innocence (of murder) and sits in a closed room while the action takes place around her, It is not a star turn for Landis. Nor is it for John Ireland. The stars here are really the plethora of character actors who turn up at this police station: a bunch of crime reporters, Don Beddoe as the precinct medical examiner, Mabel Paige as the slightly daffy street-walking flower seller and assorted crooks and people with problems (for instance, a boy with his head stuck in a bowl and his mother). Well, it all gets sorted out in the end in the most unlikely ways.

Not quite noir
This movie isn't sure whether to be film noir or a takeoff on Front Page. It starts out dark, but quickly converts to comedy of the absurd. Where did the body go? Entertaining to watch, which is not always true of a film this old. Spoiler: It's the one you least suspect!

A good movie
I liked this movie simply because I found that at it was understandable without being predictable.

It's one dimensional characters in a stagy crime drama. It all seemed so put together rather than a story developing naturally.
I downloaded the 592MB MPEG4. Video showed some compression artifacts and a few missing frames, but was Ok otherwise. Audio was Ok.
